Hygiene Index (HI) is one of the programs under DBSI and focuses on assessing the current hygiene status across India. HI comprehensively evaluates the city’s hygiene conditions by focusing on six sectors having an impact on the hygiene conditions of a city namely- water, sewerage, solid waste management (SWM), toilet, health and behaviour change communication (BCC), collectively called as the hygiene sectors.
HI is an evidence based policy tool that enables decision makers in Indian cities to better understand the challenges of Hygiene and Sanitation. The insights drawn from HI assessment enables effective allocation of resources; allowing policy makers to focus on the outputs and outcomes of their investments.
